After some good feedback on go kart safety from the Oppoverse, I ordered some 4 point harnesses and helmets for the kids (I still have a motorcycle helmet from when I actually rode for a year or so).

So yesterday we went over and my brother in law helped us add some posts to connect the harness. For the shoulder straps we added a bar to the back of the seat frame, then welded bolts to it. For the lap belt there were posts on either side for the single lap belt that was there, so we added posts to the main center rail.

My boys were great helping out, but I let my brother in law do the actual welding since we didn’t have all afternoon (his kids are 3 and 1).

Didn’t have much time to test it out yesterday, but I’ll need to work on something to keep the slack belt material from flapping around when the kids ride, but still leave enough so I can get the harness on as well.

UPDATE - A few better pictures of the posts and bumpers (also fabricated by my brother in law in about 10 minutes).

Is this a home made cart?

Essentially, but not by me.  I bought it from a local guy here in Houston that started from the general kartfab.com directions and added a few things like a hydraulic brake.

Harnesses seem like a good idea so the kids don’t slide out.

Are you concerned at all about rollover? I’m thinking about limbs getting caught where they shouldn’t be , if that happened.

Thanks. I had just looked back at your part one. Looks like a cool cart.

My neighbor got her 4 year old kid a 50cc ATV with a remote kill switch for like $600. Then as we are hanging out and my 9 year old daughter was riding it up and down the street, said neighbor kid stepped in front of the atv with hands out to stop it and got run into, 1/2 over. We are all extremely lucky kiddo had his bike helmet on. And children involved got a life lesson on safety and my daughter was shook up about it for a little while. She put the brakes on but little guy just didn’t understand the ATV doesn’t immediately stop like a little tykes car.

I’m contemplating buying a similar atv for each of the kids (son is 7) or a go cart like yours to get them started on the dynamics of driving, starting and stopping. I’d also like to get a sidecar for my motorcycle so they can eventually  join me on rides.

Those 50-80cc atvs have the worst suspension too, they flip over pretty easily compared to irs front suspension quads

They were definitely slipping all over the bench seat, as was I when I took it for a quick spin.

It is really low, so I’m not that concerned with rollover. But I have stressed to them - driver keeps his / her hands on the wheel and I got some nylon hand holds for the passenger.

That doesn’t mean they will remember if it does start to tip.

My one real regret is that it has no suspension at all. So I’ve aired the tires down to provide some impact protection, but this will be a mostly flat ground kart.

Unless we add suspension....

Kids have no experience and do stupid things because of it. I’ve had numerous run-ins with neighbors who let their kids ride ATVs and powered scooters on the street. This is a big issue because a) they never bother to teach them how traffic is supposed to flow; b) the kids have no fear, and c) none of the ATVs they’re riding on the street illegally are licensed or have insurance. That last one is the one that finally convinces the parents to stop letting their kids ride on the street. They don’t seem to give a damn if the kids almost get run over.

I don’t think I’ll be letting my kids on the ATV again around here. If I got ATVs it’ll be for riding “in the country”. They have their bikes for around here. A power wheels and a small gas ATV are very different.
